- Жезлы, огонь — индийской;
- Кубки, вода — венгерской;
- Мечи, воздух — египетской;

I. Маг XII.
II. Верховная Жрица XIII. Arkánum
III. Императрица XIV.
IV. Император XV.
V. Пророк XVI. Башня
VI. Любители XVII в.
VII. Колесница XVIII в. Луна
VIII. Юстиция XIX в.
IX. Решение
X Колесо фортуны XXI.
XI.

Kazanlar Tarot

1. The Magician

Upright Interpretation

The Magician indicates a possible auspicious beginning; the start of a career, an initiative that produces definite results, a sure success in business, unlimited possibilities.

Reversed Interpretation

It signifies an unsuccessful venture and lack of possibilities.

1. THE MAGICIAN
This card has as its kabbalistic origin the letter A or Aleph.
It signifies unlimited possibility, a fortuitous beginning in a new career or a scheme; a promising idea or initiative.
Wands = Clubs = Fire = Lion = the evangelist Mark = Summer = Mars = Iron = Red = dry and hot.
H = Cups = Hearts = Water = Angel = the evangelist Matthew = Winter = Venus = Green = wet and cold.
V = Swords = Spades = Air = Scorpion = Eagle = the evangelist John = Autumn = Jupiter = Tin = Blue = hot and wet.
H = Discs = Diamonds = Earth = Ox = the evangelist Luke = Spring = Saturn = Lead = Black = cold and dry.
The meanings of the tarot arcana can be either positive or negative, depending on whether they appear in the positive position (basic divinatory meaning) or in the negative position (reverse meaning). What does position mean in this context? If one draws a card for meditation or to make a prediction, so that the head is uppermost and the feet at the bottom, this is the positive position (except in the case of the Hanged Man, of course!). In the Oracle of the Seraphim, one of the most ancient methods of the oldest tarot spreading systems, a card is said to be in its positive position if it is put down on the left side. If it is laid on the right, its position is negative. The laying systems, or spreads, of the tarot, including the Seraphim spread, are described at the end of this book, after the explanations of the prophetic and meditative content of the arcana.
The Magician is a young man, no longer an apprentice, but already a master. He has learnt his trade, though he does not yet have a roof over his head and has to offer his wares for sale in the open air. Soon he will have his own shop, because he will be successful. That is the main forecast made by Aleph; but take care! Only in the positive position.
Therefore, in the positive position, the Magician indicates a possible auspicious beginning; the start of a career; an initiative that produces definite results; a sure success in business; unlimited possibility.
In the negative position, it signifies an unsuccessful venture and lack of possibilities.

A Magus

2. The High Priestess

Upright Interpretation

Reason is allied to diplomacy, which serves noble causes. Reason puts a finger in the book of secrets, which only it can guess at. The mouth together with its lips is the entrance door to the house of our intellect and our spirit. It can open or remain closed. Words are silver but silence is golden.

Reversed Interpretation

Fantasy and intuition, foolhardiness and melancholy as a result of own actions.

2. THE HIGH PRIESTESS
This card has its kabbalistic origin in the letter B or Beth.
Beth means house; a house with a door. It is the house of reason and it can be compared with the human face. The leaves of the door are the lips: the open or closed mouth which might tell truth, keep silent or lie.
In the original kabbala, B was exclusively the symbol of reason. When, then, did it turn into the High Priestess? At the end of the middle ages, as the Renaissance was beginning, reason became a kind of secretively dressed high priestess or female Pope. According to a legend, the female Pope Joan came to power under the assumed name of Pope John VI after managing to hide her true sex for many years and pretended at first to be a young novice and then a priest. Unfortunately for her, she was not careful enough. She took a secret lover and became pregnant. Everything was prepared so that at the appropriate time she could go incognito to a remote village and give birth to the child, give it to a wet nurse to look after and then return, dressed as a man and resume her office. She decided that before leaving for the country, she would still have time to take part in a public Easter procession. However, faced with the procession, she suddenly felt unwell; she fell to the ground, had a still birth and died on the spot. This heroine of legendary lack of sense was chosen as the archetypal symbol of good sense. The female Pope may have gained access to fame and to carnal pleasures through her pretence and her breach of faith, but she had to suffer melancholy and her own ruin as a consequence of her own actions. Naturally, and luckily, reason is not Pope Joan, who more closely resembles foolhardiness. Reason is allied to diplomacy, which serves noble causes. Reason puts a finger in the book of secrets, which only it can guess at. But all those to whom it gives the gold and the silver keys it keeps are then also able to discover them. The Sun key is the word, the deed; the Moon key is fantasy, intuition.
The oldest book of the kabbala, the Sefer Yezira teaches us that God let the letter Beth reign supreme in wisdom, that he fused them together and then created the Moon, the first day of time and the right eye of man and of woman with them.
Since Beth symbolises what our mouth speaks, though its meaning is the house, the name Elizabeth means the House of God. Likewise, from Beth Elohim, which also means the House of God, the name Bethlehem is derived. The mouth, together with its lips is the entrance door to the house of our intellect and our spirit. It can be open or remain closed. Words are silver but silence is golden.

A Fopapno

3. The Empress

Upright Interpretation

The Empress stands for the outer and inner beauty and the womanly virtues, for the shared mother, the Earth, and for the produce of the Earth, the harvest.

Reversed Interpretation

The Empress sees overabundance as a testament of her good deeds and love given.

3. THE EMPRESS
The Empress has as its kabbalistic origin the third letter of the Hebrew alphabet: G or Gimel.
Gimel means camel and symbolises the storage of water inside oneself, a child with which one becomes pregnant. It is the symbol for entrance and exit: for dialogue, in which a person is both a speaker and a listener. It is the time of the summer and of the harvest; the glorification of femininity, of beauty, of success. It is the Virgin Mary enthroned in majesty, at her feet irises, ears of corn, a lily or a lotus and the crescent moon. The Empress of the major arcana is the angel of creativity, the radiance of pure beauty. To sum her up, she stands for the outer and inner beauty and the womanly virtues, for our shared mother, the Earth and for the produce of the Earth, the harvest.
The Empress of the third major arcanum is in part the heavenly woman clothed with the Sun who is described in St. John’s Revelation, partly the bride in the Song of Solomon and finally the betrothed chosen by God, who is described in the Koran in the chapter about the Virgin Mary.

A Czaszarno

4. The Emperor

Upright Interpretation

A protector; a profession; an important opportunity in life; a position, a possession or a prospective and important employment through which the advice seeker can master his situation; power and influence; an important personality who can and wants to help in the prevailing situation.

Reversed Interpretation

This card indicates lack of strength and stability; a shortage of trustworthiness; a lack of protection, an influential person who refuses their protection and not prepared to help in solving existential problems.

4. THE EMPEROR
The kabbalistic origin of this card is the letter D, or Daleth, the fourth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The literal meaning of Daleth is door. It is the door by which the hidden contents can cross the threshold into the world of forms, of outer appearance and can become solid and perceptible. This is the door that makes concentration and will power possible. Thus Daleth is the basis of a method of reaching order, of categorisation, of a total view, phenomenology, gnosis and spiritual hierarchy.
The major arcanum of the Emperor signifies, in the positive position, a protector; an important opportunity in life; a position; a profession or a prospective and important employment through which the advice seeker can master his situation; power and influence; an important personality who can and wants to help in the prevailing situation. In the negative position, this card indicates lack of strength and stability; a shortage of trustworthiness; a lack of protection; an influential person who refuses their protection and is not prepared to help us in solving existential problems.

A Czaszar

5. The Prophet or The High Priest

Upright Interpretation

This card indicates protection and support afforded by another person who enjoys both spiritual and intellectual respect.

Reversed Interpretation

This card indicates lack of protection and lack of support afforded by another person who enjoys both spiritual and intellectual respect.

5. THE PROPHET OR THE HIGH PRIEST
Depending on the tarot set and the country, this card is also called the Hierophant, the Pope or Jupiter. It has its kabbalistic origin in the letter H or Heh of the Hebrew alphabet. Heh symbolises the drawing of breath; the voice; the sonority of transparent clarity; inspiration that leads to transcendence. The fifth card of the major arcana indicates protection and support afforded by another person who enjoys both spiritual and intellectual respect. It also stands for science, for blossoming, both spiritually and intellectually; the instruction that one is given and which one then passes on to one’s own pupils; the symbol of a conscientious adviser, of a spiritual master.

A Profeta

6. The Lovers

Upright Interpretation

The Lovers stand for a good freely-made decision and suggests that it is more worthwhile to follow the most difficult route, as long as it is the best one.

Reversed Interpretation

It warns us against a wrong decision. The simplest routes are not necessarily the best ones.

6. THE LOVERS
The kabbalistic origin of the lovers is the letter V or the Vau of the Hebrew alphabet. Vau encompasses several sounds. It is U and O as well as V. As a hieroglyph it means «fish hook» and «graft». This letter-word has the same lexical meaning in Hebrew, Arabic and Persian as the conjunction «and». It is a conjunction that links together words and sentences. It is the symbol for everything that binds, retains, gathers together, integrates. When we link ourselves to a thing or to the life of a person, we make a choice. Just as we must decide when we come to a crossroads which way to follow, in order to reach our goal without a detour.
In the positive position, the Lovers stand for a good, freely-made decision and suggests that it is more worthwhile to follow the most difficult route, as long as it is the best one. In the negative position, it warns us against a wrong decision. The simplest routes are not necessarily the best ones.

A Szerelmes

7. The Chariot

Upright Interpretation

The Chariot indicates success, fame and triumph.

Reversed Interpretation

This card indicates that projects will not be realized, that they will not succeed, but rather will end in confusion and ultimately collapse.

7. THE CHARIOT
This card has its kabbalistic origin in the Hebrew letter Zain. Zain means weapon: it could be an arrow, a dagger, a sword or a lance. Zain holds the secret of resurrection and knows the fulfilment of the procreative principle. The main figure of the seventh major arcanum is the Persian hero Rostam.
In the positive position, the Chariot indicates success, fame and triumph. The last of these gave the card its commonly-used Italian name: I trionfi and an English derivation of this is the Trumps of the Tarot. In its negative position, this card indicates that projects will not be realised, that they will not succeed, but rather will end in confusion and ultimately collapse.

8. Justice

Upright Interpretation

Justice will be served in court or in out-of-court dealings. It could equally indicate a well-deserved reward though in the sense of a right or of a punishment that fate decrees as a result of a bad deed or a karmic debt.

Reversed Interpretation

Justice will not be served in court or in out-of-court dealings.

8. JUSTICE
The eighth major arcanum has its kabbalistic origin in the letter Heth of the Hebrew alphabet.
This is the breath that instils life and guarantees justice and truth. True justice is the letter He.
Justice in the tarot is a woman and she is one of the four cardinal virtues. Her Latin name is Justitia and she belongs to the group of four virtues of the medieval Christian church. For this reason, many Catholic churches have representations of these virtues, with the same attributes and accessories as in the world of esoteric pictures and in the tarot. The un-partisan justice is blind.
For the purposes of prophecy, Justice denotes, in the positive position, that justice will be served in a court or in out-of-court dealings. It could equally indicate a well-deserved reward, though in the sense of a right or of a punishment that fate decrees as a result of a bad deed or a karmic debt.

Az Igazsag

9. The Hermit

Upright Interpretation

This card signifies friendship, protection or healing power. The Hermit indicates that the human merits and values of the enquirer have not yet been recognised to their full extent but will happen in the near future.

Reversed Interpretation

The Hermit signifies abstention, loneliness and isolation.

9. THE HERMIT
The kabbalistic origin of this card is the ninth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Teth, the Arabic equivalent of which is the letter Te, which is visible in the picture. Teth means mud, though not just the mud on the ground under our feet, but also the mud that was once used to stick the straw roofing in place on the huts. From that comes the other meaning: roof, the upper limit of a house. In Hebrew, the letters Teth and Tau are both T. Teth is the microcosm, which becomes aware of the existence of the macrocosm, while Tau is the macrocosm which becomes aware of the existence of the microcosm. The Hermit keeps himself shut off from the outside world.
The light from the Hermit’s lantern is the essence of the ninth major arcanum. It is a protected light that benefits others, but which the average person can only partly perceive. It is the light of the enlightened and of the chosen ones, outwardly modest, but richer in a spiritual sense than all rulers. The Hermit is the positive counterpart of the High Priestess. While she must keep a part of her animal and physical personality secret and must deny her material being, the Hermit has to hide a part of his spiritual and intellectual being and exercise modesty.
The Hermit is redolent of the ascetics and the saints who go into the desert, more in order to know themselves better than to put their endurance to the test. He is not a fakir; he is a wise man.
In the positive position, this card signifies friendship, protection or healing power on the part of a highly learned person who can live among the human throng and can simultaneously distance himself from it. The Hermit indicates that the human merits and values of the enquirer have not yet been recognised to their full extent, but that this will happen in the near future. In the negative position, the Hermit signifies abstention, loneliness and isolation.

10. The Wheel of Fortune.

Upright Interpretation

This is a chance for joy and happiness; it also weakens the power of negative arcana around it.

Reversed Interpretation

It signifies a sick body and mind, lack of opportunity and misfortune.

10. THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE
The kabbalistic origin of this card is in the letter Yod, which is I, Y and J together. In Hebrew and in Arabic, Yod means hand. In the esoteric sense it symbolises not just the human hand, but also the Hand of God. It is the first letter of the group YHVH, which is the secret name of God. The general meaning of this letter-name is «I am who I am». It is also the last symbolic letter of the Ten Commandments. On the waters of the Nile, upon a boat that is nothing more than a beautiful but fragile piece of melon, there stands a mast which serves as a support for the wheel of fortune with its dark and light semicircles. The light side shows Anubis with the head of a faithful dog, Hermes’ staff in his hand, in the process of ascending. This is the luck that comes to our aid. On the dark side of the wheel, the water devil Hyle is depicted falling. As long as he does not rise up again to curtail the good luck, all is well. The Sphinx sits above the Wheel of Fortune, holding the sabre in its hand, and keeps watch to prevent Hyle from climbing up again. Who is this child-like Sphinx? It is the questioning self to whom the card seems to say: «You are the Sphinx yourself and you are in a situation where you have the opportunity to interrupt the cyclical course of the wheel of fortune in a position where it is best for you. A unique opportunity which you must recognise and from which you must profit, because it will never be repeated in your lifetime.» The Sphinx is the creature described in St. John’s Revelation. It is the synthesis of the apparitions, having the face of an angel and the form of an eagle, lion and bull combined.
The divinatory significance of the Wheel of Fortune in the positive position is of a chance for joy and happiness; it also weakens the power of negative arcana around it. In the negative position, it signifies a sick body and mind, lack of opportunity and misfortune.

11. Strength

Upright Interpretation

This signifies that even seemingly insurmountable difficulties can soon be overcome and cleared aside. Thanks to your understanding a miraculous solution will appear.

Reversed Interpretation

It indicates that problems can only be solved with the greatest difficulty.

11. STRENGTH
The kabbalistic origin of Strength is in the letter K or the Kaph of the Hebrew alphabet. The hieroglyphic meaning in Hebrew, Arabic and modern Persian is the palm of the hand, which can be used to perform
a clever, human task, a creative act. Unlike the animals, the creative human hand is capable of enacting everything that exists in an abstract form in the human mind and soul and that helps us to come nearer to the divine spirit. A human can also use his hand to move things.
Strength is a woman who holds open the jaws of a lion with her bare hands while, with her third hand, she supports the main pillar of the temple, which was about to crash down.
The main element of the eleventh major arcanum is fire. Mars and the Sun both influence it. It carries within it the power of Leo and of Aries.
The divinatory significance of Strength in the positive position is that even seemingly insurmountable difficulties can soon be overcome and cleared aside, and sometimes without the help of any weapons, because — thanks to our understanding — an almost miraculous solution will appear. In the negative position, it indicates that problems can only be solved with the greatest difficulty.

12. The Hanged Man

Upright Interpretation

The Hanged Man symbolizes the present of a person who sacrifices himself for you or yours or for someone who needs him.

Reversed Interpretation

It signifies a person who does not pay enough heed to what might happen to him; someone who lacks circumspection and who wastes everything including his most precious treasure; his own life.

12. THE HANGED MAN
The kabbalistic origin of the Hanged Man is in the letter L, or the Hebrew Lamed, which is similar to the Arabic letter J-Lam. Lamed means ox goad in Hebrew. It is also a verb: to learn, to educate oneself further, to undertake studies and research. Since it is grammatically the root of the infinitive of the word learn, it understandably signifies the active process of the abstracted general imagination. The Hanged Man hangs with his head down and his feet uppermost. He could be a martyr or an ascetic who is sacrificing himself for the good of others. Perhaps he is a prophet who was not accepted by the people around him, though it also possible that he freely chooses to observe the world upside down, with his head where normally his feet would be, from an absurd viewpoint, in other words. Gold and silver fall out of his pockets. He has been excluded from society and has become an outsider. If he himself or someone else does not help him out of this situation, he will soon suffocate. He is a person who needs help.
In the positive position, the Hanged Man symbolises the presence of a person who sacrifices himself for you or yours or for someone who needs him. In the negative position, it signifies a person who does not pay enough heed to what might happen to him; someone who lacks circumspection and who wastes everything including his most precious treasure: his own life.

Az Akasztott

13. The Arcanum without a Name

Upright Interpretation

It points towards a possible new beginning; a new phase; a new way of life; the spring that follows the winter.

Reversed Interpretation

It symbolizes a disastrous phase or the hindrance of a new beginning.

13. THE ARCANUM WITHOUT A NAME
This arcanum has the letter M and the Hebrew letter Mem as its kabbalistic origin, which is equivalent to the Arabic letter Mim. In the first printed tarot packs, it was the practice never to write its real name on it. The hieroglyphic meaning of the letter Mem is water V in Hebrew, which is pronounced mime. The thirteenth letter in Hebrew is Mem and it symbolises the origin, the source. In Hebrew the word for death begins with M: Maveth; in Persian the first letter is also M: Marg. The same applies in French: mort and in Spanish: muerte, which both come from the Latin mors. The year ends with the twelfth month. The thirteenth month means the beginning of a new year, before the start of which, the old one had to die. It is the symbol for the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new era that is fundamentally different from the previous one. It may indicate an unpleasant change, though the universe of which our world is a part consists of a series of unavoidable changes that, when we consider their natural inevitability, can be useful to us. To put it in a nutshell, the Arcanum Without a Name signifies both the end and the beginning of a thing. In the positive position, it points towards a possible new beginning; a new phase; a new way of life; the spring that follows the winter. In the negative position, it symbolises a disastrous phase or the hindrance of a new beginning. The thirteenth major arcanum does not symbolise death in every case, but often change instead, the reversal of the normal course of events, the end of a modus vivendi, of one form of life, and the start of a new one.

14. Temperance

Upright Interpretation

Temperance signifies that we shall become engaged in a new activity, or work in a new place, or live in a new environment or atmosphere that will mean much more to you than the previous one and which will bring you more recognition, the greatest recognition that is possible.

Reversed Interpretation

It indicates that a change is not possible.

14. TEMPERANCE
Temperance has as its kabbalistic origin the letter N, or the Hebrew letter Nun, which is equivalent to the Arabic Ju. In Hebrew the hieroglyphic meaning of Nun is fish. According to the kabbalists, the letter Nun is capable of infusing life with personality and individuality. The picture shows the Angel of Temperance pouring the water, the elixir of life, out of a silver jug into a golden jug, which is heavier but of the same size. The angel is blue like the water. His clothing is watery blue and red like the Sun, with golden decorations, which make a contrast to the blue as fire does to water. In the background is the stone of the Kaaba, and the Zem Zem spring, which has risen next to it and is the earthly equivalent of the holy river Salsebil which, according to Islamic belief flows through heaven. One of the angel’s feet is in the region of the unconscious, in the flood, where the Great Work A stands. The foot is on the gold that the enquirer or the alchemical meditator can reach through the equilibrium of the «wise», the intelligent foresight and above all through temperance. The angel’s other foot rests on the Earth, in the world of the conscious, where the exercise of moderation bears fruit. This is associated with greater appreciation of value, better prospects or the possibility of withstanding fate’s worst onslaughts. The extent of consciousness is represented by a piece of wood lying on the ground, and on which the angel’s other foot rests. On his head, the angel wears a solar sign and above that, a feather that is as blue as his skin, his hair and his coat: the blue of the water and of the moon.
In the positive position, Temperance signifies that we shall become engaged in a new activity, or work in a new place, or live in a new environment or atmosphere that will mean much more to us than the previous one and which will bring us more recognition: the greatest recognition that is possible. In the negative position, it indicates that a change is not possible.

A Mertekletesseg

15. The Devil

Upright Interpretation

It denotes the realization of goals in the material realm.

Reversed Interpretation

It is a warning against deceptive illusions and the shaming consequences of a pact with the Devil.

15. THE DEVIL
The letter S or Samek is the kabbalistic origin of this card. Samek means protector, support, a helpful person. It is the fifteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The Arabic equivalent is sad. The form of Samek D is that of the Uroboros, the snake that bites its own tail. Its symbolic meaning is that none of the substance is lost, only the form and the place change. In the Graeco-Latin alphabet, also, the shape of the letter S is that of the snake, the creeping incarnation of evil. Our S, like the middle Eastern Samek, sounds like the hissing of the snake. Adam and Eve, the first pair of humans, even chose, when they heard the hissing of the fallen angel, to bind themselves to him with adamantine bonds. Assuredly, he is the very essence that provides the motivation for all worldly ambition. Anyone who seeks too eagerly for this essence will find himself grasping at an illusion. One of the best known names for the Prince of Darkness is «the bringer of light», or Lucifer. For this reason, he holds a flaming torch in one hand. With his goat’s horns, the udders of a nanny-goat and billy-goat’s beard, he cuts a more pitiable than threatening figure with the inscriptions dissolution and coagulation on his arms. The number 15 is the number of the devil (Satan, Lucifer, Eblis, etc.).
The Devil, in the positive position, denotes the realisation of goals in the material realm. In the negative position, it is a warning against deceptive illusions, the cunning of the Evil One, demonic deeds and the shaming consequences of a pact with the Devil.

16. The Tower

Upright Interpretation

The Tower signifies a separation from an activity, a situation or a project or separation from, or breach with one or more family members, just in time before severe damage is inflicted from one side or another. New possibilities will show themselves, that are different, but more favourable than before.

Reversed Interpretation

The Tower indicates a spiritual and intellectual schism or an earthquake, a catastrophe, an accident or some unfavourable situation.

16. THE TOWER
The Tower has as its kabbalistic origin the letter Ayin, which is the sixteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. In the Latin alphabet, there is no direct equivalent. In both Hebrew and Arabic, it is written. In both languages Ayin means eye. The sixteenth major arcanum represents the eye of God (1’oeil de Dieu in French). Earlier, in the France of the medieval times, as the tarot was arriving there, this arcanum was probably called maison d’yeux (the House of Eyes) and later, through a change in the meaning, but retaining the phonetic form, became maison Dieu (the House of God). In all other languages, this arcanum is known as the Tower.
The Tower is the card that symbolises separation. What do we see on the card? Two people who have built a tower together, but which they cannot complete. At the moment of catastrophe, they have to jump out of the side of the tower. If they do it, they can begin their lives anew, but if not, then they are in danger of spiritual destruction. From now on their ways must part. The Tower is the symbol for the reverse side of good fortune, for antagonism, lack of understanding, fighting, chaos and separation. From the world of chaos, it is only possible through separation to return to the world of order.
The Tower card signifies, in the positive position, separation from an activity, a situation or a project or separation from, or breach with, one or more family members, just in time before severe damage is inflicted from one side or another. New possibilities will show themselves, that are different, but more favourable than before. In the negative position, the Devil indicates a spiritual and intellectual schism or an earthquake, a catastrophe, an accident or some unfavourable situation.

A Torony

17. The Star

Upright Interpretation

The Star signifies that we can achieve what we strive towards through our work and effort.

Reversed Interpretation

It indicates that we will experience delay in reaching our goal and may not reach it at all.

17. THE STAR
The Star has its kabbalistic origin in the seventeenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which has two possible versions: Peh or Feh; with a full stop it is P, and without it is F. These two, also called Pe and Fe, * and *, mean mouth in Hebrew. The mouth, which expresses a wish. In Hebrew the word Pedlith begins with the letter Pe and means release. It is an allusion to a window, a door, an opening, a hole or a mouth, though which a person, an idea, a wish or a thought can escape and become a word in order to take shape under the starry sky. This is so because Peh and Feh are also astrological symbols. In the present tarot pack, the enquirer possesses — just like the fairy from The Thousand and One Nights to be seen on the card — seven stars which determine the quality of his or her fate. She, however, wishes, longs for an eighth star that fate has never granted to her. She wants to have the big star that she does not yet possess. That is why she has to make an offering from two different jugs. From the silver jug or amphora she has to pour water onto the ground so that a flower will grow, upon which the blue butterfly of her everyday wishes will settle. These wishes have little esoteric significance, but they are absolutely necessary for everyday life. It is the world of deeds and conscious efforts. From the other jug, the golden amphora, she pours water into the sea or ocean, from where she has first scooped it up. It is a votive offering like the flame of a candle that one lights in broad daylight, not for the sake of the light, but to make a vow. If the vow is kept, it is said that our sacrifice has not been wasted. It is not a flower that will grow from this visibly superfluous deed, but rather the dearly yearned-for eighth star of our heart’s desire. It is the good fortune that we have achieved through effort and sacrifice and not that which comes without effort on the wheel of fortune. One gives something and receives something in return. It is the pledge achieved through offering and sacrifice received and accepted, having been made precisely for this purpose.
From the two simultaneous gestures of the maiden, good fortune results and the star of our yearnings is reached.
The Star, in the positive position, signifies that we can achieve what we strive towards through our work and effort. In the negative position, it indicates that we will experience delay in reaching our goal and may not reach it at all.

A Csillag

18 The Moon

Upright Interpretation

This card denotes that it would be inappropriate and the wrong moment to say something with all one’s strength loud and clear, to force someone to a decision in an unresolved situation or make a decision that excludes other equally valid possibilities.

Reversed Interpretation

The Moon signifies that even though a vaguely delineated and hazy situation may be perceived as highly pleasant, it is better to bring it to an end, because it is not in your interests and does more harm than good.

18. THE MOON
The kabbalistic origin of the Moon card is the Hebrew letter Tzaddi, which is equivalent to the Arabic letter Tza. Its hieroglyphic meaning is fishhook. The hook serves also to fix together something that is loose. It makes the uncertain certain. A subtitle for the Moon is pleasant uncertainty; moonlight signifies uncertainty, and indeed the pleasant uncertainty that has indistinct contours and simultaneously colours and light-beams that shine through, appearing and disappearing at will. It is reminiscent of a will-o’-the-wisp that catches the eye and gives us a vague premonition of danger. He who sets out by moonlight can no longer turn back, because he would be pinched and bitten by the crab in the pond that denotes danger. On the moonlit road, the traveller must continue his journey to the end even though the goal may be still unknown and unseen. On either side of the card stands a beautiful tower; but there are no roads that lead to them. On the contrary, a dog and a jackal guard their entrances, both of them baying at the moon. They bark not only because they sense real danger; they symbolise unnecessary fear, unnecessary acts and unnecessary shouting. The Moon is made from the substance of the Earth. It cannot emanate any light of its own, but only reflects the true light of the Pentecost: the Sun.
In the positive position this card denotes that it would be inappropriate and the wrong moment to say something with all one’s strength loud and clear, to force someone to a decision in an unresolved situation or to make a decision that excludes other equally valid possibilities. In the negative position the Moon signifies that even though a vaguely delineated and hazy situation may be perceived as highly pleasant, it is better to bring it to an end, because it is not in our interests and does more harm than good.

A Hold

19. The Sun

Upright Interpretation

The Sun stands for good fortune and a good relationship to others, to the outside world and for the creation of a happy and cosy, radiant home.

Reversed Interpretation

It denotes the impossibility of achieving happiness for oneself, it being unreachable.

19. THE SUN
The Sun has as its kabbalistic origin the letter Q, the Hebrew Qof (Qoph), whose equivalent is the ape, the little ape Zercof who amuses and is full of the joy of life. The other, hieroglyphic, meaning of Qof is weapon, an implement with a sharp, honed blade which pursues evil. According to the esoteric anatomy, Qof should be found in the human body between the back of the neck and the upper throat. The nineteenth major arcanum is the Sun: the Sun that radiates the true mood of a feast of the Pentecost. In its light without lies, the light of absolute truth, the Sun of the true Pentecost shows everything and makes both good and evil visible. According to the alchemists, Qof and the Sun represent the third phase of the Red Work, the Opus major. On the card we see depicted an extremely inviting garden, a copy of the garden of Hiram, King Solomon’s esoteric master builder and in this garden a pair of lovers who are building a protective wall around their garden and are beginning a new existence under the rays of the new Sun of their lives. The lovers are dressed in Persian robes of the Safavid dynasty and are playing harmoniously on the same musical instrument.
The young man holds a Had-Had in his hand, a mythical bird, the messenger of King Solomon. The harmony of the music fills and surrounds this arcanum which symbolises the way and the alchemy of those who follow the true path of happiness. The glorious light of the Sun covers this garden of happiness with its glory. At the apex of the sun’s rays, are the signs of the Zodiac symbolising lasting happiness.
The nineteenth major arcanum tells of solar harmony and of the charming relationships that people can develop between themselves when they place a greater value on the other person’s sunny qualities than on their shadowy side. The card speaks also of culture and civilisation. The gold that the Sun shares amongst his children is not of a purely material nature. This purest of gold consists, above all, of peace, harmony and love. In ancient Greek culture, Apollo the Sun God was the master of light, prophecy clairvoyance and the arts, and the nine muses were at his behest.
In the positive position, the Sun stands for good fortune and a good relationship to others, to the outside world and for the creation of a happy home, an cosy, radiant home. In the negative position, it denotes the impossibility of achieving happiness for oneself, it being unreachable. In both positions, this arcanum lessens the effect of the negative arcana that surround it. The Sun symbolises a fortuitous situation in life, a pleasant atmosphere, triumph, success and an initiative that brings happiness. It is also the symbol for a shimmering and lively intelligent that serves an enormous energy, for skilfulness an broad-mindedness that can serve to clarify complicated situations.

A Nap

20. Judgement

Upright Interpretation

Judgement signifies that the human being will be reborn at the very time when it is not his own desire and that he can then continue his life filled with a new energy.

Reversed Interpretation

It shows that the possibility of rebirth is excluded and impossible.

20. JUDGEMENT
The kabbalistic origin of this arcanum is the letter R or Resh in the Hebrew alphabet, which has the Arabic equivalent Re. The meaning of Resh is head, with the derived meanings of chief or director. The Arabic word Rai’s also means head, chief, director. Resh is the kabbalistic symbol for eternal life and for good fortune. The light of the Sun reveals to our eyes the surface appearances of things, while the innermost essence, which is not perceptible to the senses, lies outside the region that it can reveal to us. Everything of beauty is an artistic creation, either of an artist or of nature. The outward form of the beautiful is only an expression of the esoteric. It is the task of the understanding, the intellect and the soul to recognise the hidden meaning. Within the world-spirit, the perception of the creator and in the head of the human being, of the creation, the Judgement exists from the very first to the last moment of the existence of the universe. The human and the divine court serves to distinguish the spiritual from the material, the intellectual from the sensory; to distinguish the deepest essential content from the exterior, superficial expression; the living word from the lifeless letter. The visible exterior of this card suggests the day of the Last Judgement and the arrival of the Great Solar Eclipse when the dead will rise up out of the grave. The apocalypse means not only the end of the world gone astray, but also the birth of a new, golden, paradisiacal age. Above all, though, it is the rebirth of the individual that this card promises us, as much as a beautiful and promising new age.
In the positive position, the Judgement signifies that the human being will be reborn at the very time when this is not his own desire and that he can then continue his life filled with a new energy. In the negative position, it shows that the possibility of rebirth is excluded and impossible.

Az Itelet

21. The World

Upright Interpretation

This card signifies an activity that arises out of a gain, out of money, a journey that brings great happiness, a feat with impressive results, pleasant experiences, lasting happiness.

Reversed Interpretation

This card signifies a hindrance to gain, money, to a journey that would have brought great happiness also to a feat with would have brought impressive results, pleasant experiences and lasting happiness.

21. THE WORLD
The World has as its kabbalistic origin the letter T or Tau in the Hebrew alphabet, which represents the letter Tab in the Arabic alphabet. Tau means cross. For the kabbalists, this is the absolute that cannot be deciphered by man. The four apocalyptic figures in the corners, with the head of a man, an eagle, a lion and a bull, stand for the balance that is essential if chaos is to be avoided. In the centre of the arcanum, the snake Uroboros, that bites its own tail, and the green laurel wreath with which it is intertwined, represent matter constantly renewing itself. Four roses decorate the crown and suggest the shape of an invisible spiritual cross inside the laurel crown, inside the material substance that only triumphs superficially. The true triumph is that of the invisible cross suggested by the four roses. The twenty-first arcanum signifies above all that the enquirer, as a micro-cosmos, will find his or her place in the macrocosmos within the World. The letter Tau is essentially the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. However, in many tarot traditions Tau has been swapped with Shin, so that the World is the penultimate major arcanum and the Fool can become the last, because the Fool, representing as he does beginning and end, should actually be at the end of the major arcana. The World presupposes an elementary completeness. The four fundamental elements are visible in the corners of the card, symbolised by the four apocalyptic figures, which are also reminiscent of the four gospel writers. The bull of St. Luke represents earth; the lion of St. Mark stands for fire; the eagle of St. John is air and the human-faced angel of St. Matthew represents the water of the angelic Aquarius, who also represents Temperance. There is a fifth element here: the ether, which is not of an earthly, but rather of a spiritual nature. This too is present in the world; it is the fifth substance or essence of the world, the so-called quintessence. Should it not then be present on our World card? But no, it is already very present indeed. But what symbolises it? The protagonist in the middle of the picture, the female acrobat, who will be spoken of later. Should not the four apostles, each of whom represents an element, be enough to represent the fifth apostle? Of course. He called himself Barnabas. According to the Islamic tradition, Christ said on the cross to his apostle Barnabas: «You who have accompanied me everywhere I have gone, write everything down that you know.» The gospel of Barnabas was written first of all, long before the others.
In the positive position, this card signifies an activity that arises out of a gain, out of money, a journey that brings great happiness, a feat with impressive results, pleasant experiences, lasting happiness. In the negative position, it denotes the hindrance of all these things.

A Vilag

22. The Fool

Upright Interpretation

The Fool is a call, a challenge to us to behave like the gypsies and not to be rational at all costs. If we grant our feelings free expression, then at the present moment, it promises good fortune.

Reversed Interpretation

The Fool is an admonition not to perpetrate any foolishnesses, not to make ourselves intolerable, not to be too unconventional or illogical and not to behave like an outsider.

22. THE FOOL
This card has its kabbalistic origin not in the 22nd, but in the 21st letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Shin, which is equivalent to the Arabic letter Shin.
As was mentioned above, the Hebrew letters Tau and Shin have changed places in the tarot with respect to their kabbalistic order. Shin means tooth, though the hieroglyphic meaning of Shin is an arrow that wavers in flight. The sum of 22 by kabbalistic addition is 2 + 2 = 4, the number of the ruler. The Fool is a person with a very gypsy-like, artistic or poetic character, or a scholar. He can equally be truly mentally disturbed.
In one hand he holds a staff, to the end of which he has tied his bundle. Inside the bundle is his whole world, everything from the world that he keeps, whether out of wisdom or madness, because either he knows that he cannot take any possessions with him into the other world, or else he is not aware of the riches that he wastes. In the other hand he holds a flower, pulled up roots and all, which is just as much out of its element as the Fool himself. He can replant this flower in a new place where he is going to live, so that it will bloom as before. If the Fool is actually cleverer than one thinks, he will recreate his original garden wherever he settles, as an emigrant. In that way, the Fool can become the wise ruler. 22 = 2 + 2 = 4 say the kabbalists. But 22 = 0 is also possible. If the 22 cards are laid out in a circle, then this major arcanum ends the alphabetic series of the arcana and also stands before the first card. His little dog is pulling down his trousers. Is this the Fool’s dog that attacks him instead of serving him? Or is it a trusty friend who wants to prevent him doing stupid things and getting into dangerous situations, but for whom the fleeing Fool leaves only a few strips of cloth behind. In front of the Fool is the castle that he builds for himself in the clouds: his dream castle. It lies in the moonlight, in the corner opposite the Sun. If he cannot really attain this dream castle, then he is truly nothing but a mad dreamer. But every palace, every famous building has had first to be imagined by an architect. If the Fool realises his dream, he will no longer be a madman, but rather a great builder, a brilliant architect. Genius and ridiculousness are closely related! The same applies the other way round. Although our protagonist with the little bell on his hat is right at the end of the major arcana, it is not impossible that the other twenty-one other cards are stations of his development, through which he must pass to reach the world of perfection. It is also possible that he is so wise that he pays no regard to worldly values.
The Fool in the positive position is a call, a challenge to us to behave like the gypsies and not to be rational at all costs. If we grant our feelings free expression, then at the present moment it promises good fortune. In the negative position, the Fool is an admonition not to perpetrate any foolishnesses, not to make ourselves intolerable, not to be too unconventional or illogical and not to behave like an outsider.

A Bolond

KING OF WANDS
Shah Jahan, one of the most famous emperors of the Mogul dynasty that was founded by Akbar the Great. When he lost his beloved wife, he had the most beautiful mausoleum in India built to honour her: the Taj Mahal in Agra. The King of Wands, Shah Jahan is the Fire of fires, since the kingdom of clubs and of wands is derived from the letter Yod the flame of the eternal fire of life, whose element is fire.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A decisive man or woman, whose goals are predetermined by their position and does not shirk risks and the taking of initiatives. The card indicates also an unexpected inheritance or a very promising wedding, which nevertheless brings with it unanticipated problems and conflicts that have to be resolved.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A strict man, who neither compromises nor makes admissions and who passes harsh judgements. It can also indicate a disagreement, resistance, objections, an uprising or a rebellion. One should take heed of this forewarning and listen to well-meant logical arguments.

QUEEN OF WANDS
She is the favourite wife of the great Mogul, the first queen among the queens of the harem, the well cared for consort of the emperor of India. Her two firstborn children, the little Crown Prince and a princess are hiding themselves under her skirts. The three haloes that surround her head form a shining clover-leaf or cross shape.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A woman (or sometimes a man) of the external life and with a magnetic character, who lives in the country or who would like to live there, in a place where there are gardens and greenery. It is a person who loves nature. When the Queen of Wands lies next to an arcanum that represents a woman, she takes responsibility for her fate. This arcanum means that one will have success in a task, in one’s work, in studies or training, with a company or in other business.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A virtuous woman (or man), but who is strict and sparing; so sparing is she that it borders on miserliness. Egotism. Disagreement. Argument. Jealousy. The origin of a disappointment. Betrayal or disloyalty.

KNIGHT OF WANDS
A prince from the royal family of Moguls that rules over India. He sits on an elephant covered with a carpet and decorated with jewels. This intelligent animal that is extremely strong, though not a carnivore, is one of the most outstanding creatures of the Indian fauna.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A person who seeks fights or quarrels because of trifles, and who, against the advice of his friends who (like his elephant) are more peaceable, creates situations that are determined by conflict or competition. He is the born provocateur. The card also signifies that one separates oneself from something one ought to keep hold of. It is parting and absence, riding with loose reins. A voluntary and not necessary flight. A parting or a journey that has been decided upon and realised very quickly. Moving house, a change of flat, lodging or business address. The elephant is wiser and more serene than he who rides it!
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A difference of opinion. Conflict. Deep disappointment in connection with a marriage. Impatience of a person who believes himself capable of occupying a job or position (even that of the Crown Prince!), but lacks of suitable opportunities. Someone who sees something as being predestined for him, but who would do better to look for a realistic occupation.

PAGE OF WANDS
In a typical Indian landscape, we see a prince from the family of the Moguls, who holds a torch in one hand and in the other a fantastic bird, the Had-Had, the love messenger of Solomon, who carried his letters to the queen of Sheba. He lights the way and brings people good news, without seeking conflict or war; he has no war-like intentions, but rather wants to spread peace.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A faithful loved one. Messenger. Postman. Connections. Finesse in love affairs and relationships. A small boy or girl. If the Page of Wands follows a major or a minor arcanum that shows a man, then he indicates a person who means well in an agreement, a legal matter, a trial or in connection with a third person who is significant for the enquirer.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Unpleasant news, uncertainty. No news from a person who is important to us. Fear and stress due to the lack of news. A conflict of decisions in a situation where we must decide between two solutions that can influence the rest of our life.

TEN OF WANDS
This card, in its positive position, derives its meaning from Malkuth and in the negative from Adramelech. The depiction on this minor arcanum leads us into the court life of the Moguls. They are no longer at the peak of their power, but are in decline. We witness a hunt without success, in which the forces are not employed and distributed wisely. The vanity and superficiality of the unskilful hunter give the situation a terrible twist.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Triumph of the accumulated karma. A superlative chance that could lead to a despotic suppression of others, to the practices of tyranny.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Defamation, with the intention of tearing down the existing order. Dangerous and daring behaviour. Lack of loyalty.

NINE OF WANDS
This minor arcanum is derived, in its positive position, from Jesod and in the negative position from Nisroch. We see here the story of Savitri. The goddess of prayer came down to the earth in the incarnation of a woman in order to marry the king of Madra, Asvapati. She bore him a girl, Savitri. As Savitri reaches marriageable age, three princes are presented to her. Her father advises her, though, that
the one of the three whom she favours, Satyavant, has an incurable disease and has been condemned by the gods to die within one year. Against her father’s advice, Savitri becomes Satyavant’s wife. She takes a vow that she will not move for three days and nights, not to eat, drink or sleep if the god of death Yama will leave her husband alive. In a wood, where her husband does eventually lie dying, Savitri argues fiercely with Yama for the life of her beloved. After long resistance, he finally gives way and allows the spouse of the faithful wife to return to life.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Marriage or an earthly agreement which represents a heavenly union on the higher plane, the unio mysti-ca of divine ordination. A prayer that is heard. Unconquerable strength and stability. Joy. Luck in a game.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Stubbornness. Fixed, damaging idea from which one cannot free oneself. Inability to compromise, although it is required. Harmful and unnecessary mistrust. Paranoia. Manic fear of persecution. Loss of life forces because of nervous depression.

SEVEN OF WANDS
The meaning in the positive position is derived from Net sack, and in the negative position from Nergal. This card shows a hermit from the Hindu-influenced region of Bihar. The hermit is an ascetic and a master, a holy man to whom people come to ask for advice, either in an attempt to understand the secret and esoteric meaning of life, or to ask him about their destiny, or about decisions they have to make, to improve their karma and live more harmoniously.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A time of victory that one wins through experience. A time of great opportunities, though to profit from them, we must show courage, dauntlessness and decisiveness. Prospect of deep consolation.

We see the four earthly elements: the blue water under the lotus, the brown earth above the water and the horizon, the red of the sun’s rays at sunrise and sunset for the fire of the radiant star. Around the head and body of the Buddha, the air is filled with a golden glow. The Buddha’s navel chakra or manipura appears like a microcosmic sun.

FIVE OF WANDS
In its positive position, this card derives from Sedutah and in the negative from Azima. This minor arcanum shows one of the best-known legends from the Hindu Ramayana epic, the life story of Rama. Rama, one of the highest Hindu deities, was, in an earthly incarnation, king of a part of India and took as his wife Sita, one of the most beautiful girls that ever lived. The demon of Lanka, too, fell in love with Sita and wanted to win her for himself at any price. To this end he used black magic and played an extremely perfidious trick. He changed himself into a golden hind and showed himself to the beautiful queen as she walked through the jungle with her divine husband. At once Sita begged Rama to catch the hind for her. Rama sensed that there was something diabolical about the hind and he drew a magic circle round Sita with a piece of chalk, to protect her against a possible demonic attack. He told her not to move outside the circle for an instant. If she put so much as a foot outside it, she would fall victim to the devil. Then he set off to find the golden hind. The demon of Lanka, who appears on our card with nine heads, appeared in the guise of an old, limping beggar. Sita was eating fruit and the ostensible beggar told her that he had not eaten anything for days and asked to be given some of her fruit. Sita felt pity for him and told him to come nearer and to take some, since she was inside the circle. «It is too far«, said the beggar, «and my feet are hurting so much that I cannot come to you. Have mercy. Come here and give me your gracious gift.» The unsuspecting Sita stepped out of the circle in good faith but she had fallen into the trap. The demon caught her and carried her off to his palace in Ceylon. Only after a year was Rama able to free her.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A contradiction that we can only overcome through spiritual powers. Tests to be withstood. A fight in which we must recognise the all-decisive karma in order to win. Karmic release must be realised here.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Strife or a battle that can be avoided if one would just keep one’s head. Beware: If we continue, it will no longer just be a dispute, but will turn into a brawl and we are the losers! If we are not careful of all that is demanded of us and said to us, we could become the victim of perfidy!

FOUR OF WANDS
The meaning of this card in the positive position is derived from Geburah and in the negative position from Marcolis. The picture shows a candle which illuminates the activities that man can engage in with four rushes or bamboo canes or twigs. The four wands are used to exercise the four most important liberal arts: the shaped quill is the literary arts, prose and poetry. The stirring stick is used in alchemy, the mixing of medicines, poultices and elixirs. By adding fine animal hairs, the stick becomes a brush with which one can paint pictures and symbols. If you drill holes in a cane, it becomes a flute to play melodies, either happy or sad.

THREE OF WANDS
This card, when it is laid in its positive position, draws its meaning from Binah and in the negative, from Thartac. This minor arcanum shows Parvati, the consort of the highest of the Hindu deities, Shiva. Out of the divine lotus (symbol of the divine self in the human self, of the divine spirit in human understanding, of individualism in the crowd, of the microcosm within the macrocosm) appears the feminine half of the original god, who was both man and woman: Shiva-Parvati. Parvati, who became an individual, adds to and completes Shiva. Parvati symbolises gracefulness, beauty and divine mercy.

This card, in its positive position derives its meaning from Chochmah and in the negative position from Nibbas. On this minor arcanum are depicted Krishna and Radha, who are divine lovers in classical Hinduism.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Strength of will which facilitates the implementation of ideas. Honour, well-earned respect and wealth. Pride without its negative, arrogance. Earthly harmony, like the music of Krishna and Radha. Spiritual harmony. An auspicious atmosphere, in which to feed the spiritual flame in cooperation.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Ambition aimed only towards power whatever the cost. Indifference and phlegmatism once the goal is reached. Disappointment. Loss of self-confidence.

ACE OF WANDS
When it lies in the positive position, its meaning is derived from Kether and in the negative position from Rempham. On this minor arcanum we see Shiva, one of the three highest deities in Hinduism, on the peak of the Nanda Devi or White God, the highest summit of the Indian Himalayas. He is almighty and his many arms symbolise the eternal creation. Shiva’s dance is divine. It is the rhythm of life, which creates everything that is positive, ethical and beautiful. The Ace of Wands is the symbol of the masculine principle. Solar, active, energetic and creative, Shiva is truly the universal masculine principle.

KING OF CUPS
Stephen I, the saint king, the founder of the Christian monarchy in Hungary. His father was a pagan. Stephen I had himself, the court dignitaries, the army and the people baptised. Then he married Princess Gisela, the daughter of the king of Bavaria. His son Emmerich, who died young, was also canonised by the church. The card shows St. Stephen I on his throne in Eszergom, the then capital city of Hungary and at his side the prince, St. Emmerich.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A personality that owes its power and authority to spiritual strength, a person comparable to a patron of noble mild-mannered nature, who one can trust. Now or in the future, this person will distinguish himself through his vocation or his work; he or she could be an outstanding in business. He will create his little empire quietly but sure-footedly. All those who have this person as their partner in business life or privately can count themselves very lucky.

Someone who only accepts responsibility for himself, who induces business partners, friends and family to criminality and corruption.

QUEEN OF CUPS
Emesche, queen of the Huns has a dream. According to an old Hungarian legend, the tribe of the Huns, the forefathers of the Hungarians or Magyars had a woman chieftain or queen called Emesche. Before the Hungarians settled in the modern Hungary, she had a dream in which her god sent a legendary bird, the Turul, which became the father of her child, a prince from whom the Hungarian kings originated. In this dream she saw a spring that became a river springing from her lap, and on the river all those who later would wear the Hungarian crown. The Hungarians have a legendary story that tells how they originated in an old kingdom that was swallowed by the Atlantic Ocean. Some people were able to escape from this deluge and founded the kingdom of Sumer and then of Turan and finally came to Europe, where they founded modern Hungary. It is therefore the water that flooded the Hungarians, first country, but also the water of the river of their present home. It stands also for all positive feelings, since the maternal feelings above all secure the future of coming generations.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A revered woman. Ideal mother. Life-long partner or wife, who is unsurpassed for goodness, generosity and devotion. The ideal lover girl-friend or fiancee. Young girl, woman or old lady with clairvoyant abilities. A woman who is inclined to poetic daydreams, which she is not able to turn into reality.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A woman with good intentions, but who causes evil without actually wanting to do so. An upright wife who has no luck. Lacking moral understanding.

KNIGHT OF CUPS
Prince Chaba, Attila’s son. Attila, the king of the Huns, was the first Hungarian to come to Europe to what is today Hungary, or Pannonia as it was called then. Later one of his descendants, Arpad settled permanently there. Prince Chaba, Attila’s son, constantly looked after his father’s subjects. When he was still a young man, he disappeared. According to a legend, he will one day reappear on the Milky Way to bring material well-being and peace of mind to the Hungarians.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A highly intelligent young man filled with a romantic dream. Someone who delivers a love letter or good news. Advancement in the realm of work, in the office, factory or other workplace. An undertaking that brings wealth. Financial gains. Successful business. An invitation that brings joy. An action that is profitable and brings happiness.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Beware! The visible goodwill is only a mask, a deception. The enquirer should not participate in anything suggested to him at present, without first weighing it up.

PAGE OF CUPS

Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A young man who is still studying or is learning his trade and who has a great deal of imagination. He is prepared to do the enquirer a service. Fantasy that takes on a physical form. The birth of a child. Creation. Realisation of a work. A new approach and novelties in work or business. A message received joyfully. A welcome novelty.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Soon the origin of the difficulties or hindrances that lie in our way will become clear. Disappointment. A disastrous attraction, love or passion.

TEN OF CUPS
In the positive position, this card derives its meaning from Malkuth and in the negative position from Adramelech. On this arcanum, we see King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary, the greatest king of the Hungarian Renaissance, and Queen Beatrix, the daughter of the King of Naples. Matthias had a summer residence at Visegrad in a bend of the Danube, where on feast days, to the great amazement and entertainment j of the guests, wine flowed out of the fountain instead of water. Matthias was a powerful and cultured king and a generous patron.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: The security and wealth of a luxurious, peaceful environ- j ment. Efforts to improve one’s own situation and j that of those who we wish to help to success. Perfect agreement with our partners. Improvement of our j quality of life. Advantageous contracts with respect to the future.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Egotistical exploitation of people who depend on us. Behaviour that destroys family unity and damages society. Sudden shattering of the prevailing order and the normal processes. Damaging and hypocritical demagoguery.

NINE OF CUPS
In the positive position, this card draws its meaning from Jesod, and in the negative from Nisroch. The picture on this minor arcanum shows the Count of Saint-Germain, a famous magician and alchemist of the 18th century, who holds in his hand a cup containing the elixir of eternal youth. The father of Saint-Germain was the Hungarian prince Franz Rakoczi II, who went into exile to the court of Louis XIV. The prince entered into a morganatic marriage with the widow of Louis’ brother. They had a brilliant son in Saint-Germain, who pursued studies including alchemy, in France, Italy, Germany and Austria. He formed the so-called female homunculus or homuncula by performing artificial fertilisations in artificial wombs. He brought up the girl who was thus produced and later married her in Russia. This «artificial» woman became the famous card playing «Queen of Spades» after he had taught her how always to win. In the picture we see Saint-Germain with his card-playing wife who became almost as famous as her father.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Self-assurance. Satisfaction with the results achieved in life. A balanced emotional state. Material and spiritual generosity. Well-being. Success in all areas. Pride that we feel in our pupils or children or in those who listen to our advice. The prospect of a welcome move or journey that will improve our life.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Vanity that prevents us from recognising our true situation. Misuse of hospitality that is offered. Decline in popularity. The weakness of the people around us increases. Loss of love.

EIGHT OF CUPS
In the positive position, the meaning of this card is drawn from Hod and in the negative position, from Succoth. This minor arcanum depicts two Hungarian knights, Hunor and Magor. These two princes lived in Asia and one day a golden stag ran in front of their horses. They followed it to a lush place where they found beautiful and marriageable maidens. They married the maidens and led their people to the place where their descendants finally settled. That place is what is now called Hungary.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Predictable changes of feelings. New sympathies and leanings. Possibilities to leave the past behind, with the prospect of a highly promising future. Alteration of viewpoints, leading to a radical change in our outlook. A new phase of life.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Beware! If you continue to ignore and fail to understand the new signals to start a new life, you risk failure in your work and private life. Take care! You must distinguish the realistic ideal from the unrealistic. Do not chase after shadows. Constant dissatisfaction, which does not allow one to recognise the new possibilities of good fortune, peace and prosperity.

SEVEN OF CUPS
The positive position draws its meaning from Net-sack, the negative from Nergal. In the picture we see St. Margaret of Hungary, a princess from the House of Arpadier who chose, rather than be a queen and the wife of a worldly monarch, to become a nun and founded a convent on an island in the Danube.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: The enquirer must take a decision and make an important choice from several possibilities. A mystical experience that will influence our whole life.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Disappointment resulting from false hopes. A good opportunity to grasp one’s own good fortune will be missed through passivity.

SIX OF CUPS
The meaning of this card in the positive position is derived from Tipheret and in the negative position from Anamelech. In the picture we see St. Martin of Hungary or, as it was then known, Pannonia, as a Roman soldier in the city of Szombathely giving half of his cloak to a beggar. Legend has it that the beggar was none other than Christ himself, who then persuaded Martin to follow his teachings. St. Martin even became a priest and was sent to France, where he was made Bishop of Tours. While he was there, he began to perform many miraculous acts of healing, following the example of Jesus Christ and his apostles. He also became the patron saint of esoteric healers. In the bottom part of the picture we see him in Tours, healing a sick person. He wears a mitre and on his robes there is a star of St. Martin, which is simply the Star of David with a double outline.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A past event that brings present satisfaction. New elements in our lives that link with the past and remain in the future. Good fortune that arises from efforts and sacrifices in the past.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Useless yearning for things past that will not ever be again. A struggle that is doomed to fail because we are unable to adapt to the changes that time brings. Damaging conservatism. Inability to recognise where the sunrise of the future will take place.

FIVE OF CUPS
The positive position derives its meaning from Sedutah and the negative from Azima. This minor arcanum depicts one of the greatest personalities of the Hungarian Renaissance, Cardinal Vitez Janos, the uncle of King Matthias. He is having figures from the tarot painted on the wall of his palace by the Italian painter Alberti: the High Priestess, Temperance, Strength, Justice and Judgement. The subject matter of these paintings was directed towards King Matthias who waged too many wars against his European neighbours and did not defend himself sufficiently against the danger from Turkey. Matthias did not want to understand the message of the wise cardinal.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A lesser inheritance than was expected. A poor marriage. Ascetic abstention from simple pleasures. The character of a frustrated inventor. The chalices of luck have been knocked over. Peace makes way for unease. The fear of losing all. Melancholy and disappointment. However there is a route out of the bad luck, provided that one looks for a solution. One must reshape one’s life and if that is successful, then all is not lost!
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Unhappiness that paralyses us into inactivity. Stress and fear that flood over us unforeseen.

FOUR OF CUPS
The meaning of this card, in the positive position is derived from Geburah, and in the negative from Marcolis. The card shows Franz-Joseph I, emperor of Austria and king of Hungary, who lost his wife empress Sissi, his son Rudolf and his nephew Franz Ferdinand through an excessive quest for power. Sissi was murdered in Italy by an Italian who did not want Italy to become dependent on Austria. Archduke Rudolf was married off by his father to Princess Stephanie of Belgium. He did not love her and betrayed her at the Mayerling schloss with Mary Vetsera. Both of them were found dead there. To this day, no one knows whether it was murder or suicide. Franz Ferdinand who then became the heir to the throne was the victim of an assassination in Sarajevo. Following that Franz-Joseph sparked off the First World War.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Struggle and power have reached a point where no more increase can be expected. Honour and wealth. The emotional equilibrium is so perfect that it appears impossible to maintain. Foundation of a family. Passive joy at prosperity achieved. This card also indicates in the positive position that our goals cannot possibly be fulfilled to the extent that we hope. Love turns into simple familiarity. Since the high-point has been reached, decline must follow.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Disproportionate satisfaction. Over-saturation followed by weariness due to various excesses. Tiredness and disappointment through excessive for material yearning things. Leniency towards oneself, qot allowing for self-criticism.

THREE OF CUPS
The meaning of this card in the positive position is derived from Binah and in the negative position from Thartac. The protagonist on the card is Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. This Hungarian princess from the House of Arpadier was married to a particularly miserly prince who forbade her to distribute bread every day to the poor children. However when he was not looking, she carried on feeding them. One day her husband surprised her and asked: «What have you got in your apron? What are you giving to the poor?» Elizabeth prayed to the Holy Trinity to help her in performing a miracle. «Sire», she answered her husband «they are roses». Her faith was so firm that she boldly showed him the contents of her apron, and indeed, the bread had turned into roses.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: The successful organization of a matter. Understanding and mutual accord. Dispute with a positive end. Good mood. Fortuitous outcome. Victory. Plenty. A liberal viewpoint in considering problems. Harmony. A satisfactorily solved problem. Intelligence. Wonder. Diplomacy. A good deed rewarded. Comfort. Peace of mind. Belief. Demands resulting in a good outcome. Miraculous healing.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Negotiations without result. Bankruptcy. Shame. Disgrace resulting from a lie no one believes in any longer.

TWO OF CUPS
This card, in its positive position derives its meaning from Chochmah and in the negative position from Nibbas. This minor arcanum shows Kuska and Janos, the protagonists of an esoteric-symbolic poem by the Hungarian poet Petofi. It is the story of two young people who find their way back to each other after numerous difficulties. To be more precise, it tells of the death and return to life of the girl. Finally they find their way off the enchanted island and marry. For that reason, they are raising their cups.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A new friendship or the beginning of a new love. The meeting of the eternal with the mortal. A spiritual or mystical connection. A higher quality than before, even at the price of severe tests. Harmony. Cooperation. Commitment. Respect for the law. Precautions. Mutual trust producing optimal results in a cooperative effort.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A disreputable leaning. Simulated love. Insensitivity. Overwhelming, destructive passion. Unbending rigour. Blind belief of the fanatic. Dog-like faithfulness. Impending self-destruction.

ACE OF CUPS
This is the symbol of the female principle. Lunar, aquatic like the Danube that can be seen in the background of the picture. Princess Chardash, in the form of a beautiful magician, is indeed one of the modern symbols for the universal female principle.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: The union of all the good characteristics that a woman can possess. Passive power. Care of possessions with feminine measures and successful results. The feminine principle. Provision and care of oneself. Protection and defence. The course of creation. Belief in the goal that has been set. Intuition. The gift of pre-cognition and clairvoyance. Advantageous presence. Fruitfulness. Results in the field of work inspired through feelings and love. Marriage that promises a long partnership. Motherhood. Joy and satisfaction. In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: An unpleasant atmosphere, uninteresting and unattractive surroundings. Desert. Sterility. Lack of feelings and love. Stagnation. Immobility. Sadness. Loss of hope and belief.

KING OF SWORDS
This is Osiris, the major deity of a solar, masculine and active character, whose brother Seth killed him out of jealousy and cut him into fourteen pieces with a sword. Isis, the divine wife of the dead Osiris, lunar, feminine and passive deity, decided to bring her husband back to life. Our picture shows Osiris, alive once more, having just straightened himself up.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A man who is capable of achieving much but who, at the moment, because of his talents and extraordinary abilities is surrounded by envious people, even in his own family. A person with initiative. An inventor. Good ideas. Defender of law and order. A person who is respected. He fulfils his duties through to completion. His only fault is that he performs several tasks and jobs at once and risks overworking himself.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A gruesome, sadistic person, who always has a cool head and exercises power by sacrificing the peace and well-being of his fellow man. Determination to reach his goals enables him to commit the most varied of evil deeds. Criminal tendencies. A person who can provoke a chaotic muddle and meanwhile announces loudly that law and order must return.

QUEEN OF SWORDS
Isis, the widow of Osiris, after she had mourned the death of Osiris (caused by his brother Seth), wanted to hide her husband’s body to be able to call him back to life. However, Seth found the body and cut it up into fourteen pieces. Isis took the sabre with which Osiris had been cut up and buried the pieces in fourteen different places throughout Egypt. In this way, she founded the fourteen great cities of ancient Egypt, of which the first were Memphis (the modern Cairo), Karnak, Thebes and Luxor. The murder weapon became the sword of construction.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A, woman of exceptional understanding and high intelligence, who possesses a strong personality and takes note of all things that affect her, even the smallest. She is used to earning money, either through her own work or through her business sense. She achieves, at any price, what she wants. Anyone who tries
to fool her should be warned!
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A woman who departs from the narrow way.
An unholy intriguer. A person who uses her psychological understanding to do harm to those around her, purely for the sake of it.

KNIGHT OF SWORDS
Horus, the eternal god who reigns over the finite time of the mortals. Etymologically, the words heure, hour, hora, etc. in the languages derived from Latin have their origin in Horus. He is often represented with the head of a falcon and sometimes of an eagle. Sometimes he has the body of a bird of prey, as in our depiction, where the pyramid in the background indicates that this is the empire of the princes of finite time. His true empire is on the Earth rather than in Heaven, because it is he who determines the lifespans of the world’s inhabitants. This bird does, however, lift himself up from the Earth and takes away everything that is of importance.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A strong and brave young man, who knows how to solve the trickiest of problems and most difficult situations. He is the archetypical warrior. It is better to be among his friends than his enemies. Even in the greatest misfortune his thoughts, his intentions and his attitudes remain entirely noble.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: An obstinate and quarrelsome person, who strikes out over the merest trifle and argues purely for the sake of it. A self-satisfied person. Absurd and ridiculous vanity. A self-important character who makes himself a laughing-stock. Inability to adapt oneself to changed circumstances.

PAGE OF SWORDS
Seth, the brother of Osiris, of whom (like Cain of Abel) he was jealous, then killed him and cut up his body into fourteen pieces. Seth has the head of a falcon, which is what his nephew Horus will be. With his sword he cuts up the eternal matter (the snake Apopi) and the eternal spirit (Osiris) and so lays the foundation for the short, mortal existence of humans and animals.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: The ideal personal messenger. A faithful pupil or apprentice, of whom one can be proud. A child that is true to his parents even in the most trying moments. A young person of whom everyone around him is proud, since he achieves good results through his competitiveness. He is a born negotiator, who works reliably for his seniors.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A rowdy who wants at any cost to involve himself in matters that do not concern him. A fighter without logic or understanding.

TEN OF SWORDS
The positive position derives is meaning from Malkuth and the negative from Adramelech. This minor arcanum depicts the mummy of a dead Pharaoh that is being laid out shortly before his ceremonial burial in the pyramid visible in the background. Above, two birds symbolise the Ba and the Ka, while below, the pleading hands stretching towards heaven symbolise the Ah. Ba and Ka are the first two phases of the soul, first earthly, then astral, while Ah is the condition of the soul, which, because of its perfection can enter the eternal light of the at on (the setting sun) in the form of an atom. This arcanum represents the peace of the Other Side.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A person’s death will solve your present problems. Look after your health and nutrition.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Atonement is impossible between two opposing parties.

а) не тащи за собой груз предков, не бери на себя их проблемы, те проблемы давно уже ушли, и нам надо их не решать, а забыть;
б) освободись от чувства вины перед предками, вспомни: ты-ничего-не-мог-сделать, они сами выбрали свою судьбу, и теперь твоя задача – выбрать свою собственную;
в) подумай, что ты сам оставишь после себя, и пусть твое наследие приносит потомкам радость, а не огорчение (не создавай у них чувства вины);

NINE OF SWORDS
In the positive position the meaning is derived from Jesod and in the negative from Nisroch. In the picture of this arcanum we see the condemned in front of the court of the Other Side and not of This Side, or, in other words, in front of the court of Osiris. Anubis is using his scales to weigh his good and evil deeds. Ibis-Thoth writes everything down on a slate that is told of the sins and virtues of the dead person. Osiris, the highest judge on the Other Side has passed his judgment: damnation. Ammit, with the head 1 of a crocodile, the body of a cheetah, bear’s paws and a lion’s mane, the chimera of destruction, will swallow the damned soul. In Ammit’s stomach, the unfortunate will have to remain for all eternity in absolute darkness, crawl about on hands and knees and eat his own faeces.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Difficulties in the current life due to the karma built up in the previous life.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Others only remember our less likeable character traits.

EIGHT OF SWORDS
In the positive position, the meaning of this card is irawn from Hod and in the negative position from Succoth. The picture shows Zehmet-Bastet, the god }f Sorrow, with the head of a cat and the body of a woman. Zehmet is the divine incarnation of the destructive power of the sun. She is the wife of the rod Ptah who is the power of Action and is a divine blacksmith and patron of artists.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Enforced isolation. Illness or misfortune that makes s ponder and thus has an enriching effect. The circumstances of our life deteriorate, although the difficulties can be overcome with endurance and will-owe r.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Despair. Depression. Discouragement. Disappointment, because a major job of work we have one is badly rewarded. Your efforts are in the wrong direction. Be more sparing with your time and energy.

SEVEN OF SWORDS
In the positive position the meaning of this card is drawn from Netsach and in the negative from Ner-gal. The picture shows the magical protection and spiritual defence that are taught to the Pharaohs by the high priests and are symbolised by the stars, the pyramids and the spiritual presence of the Pharaohs after their death and by the seven swords. This card stands for the spiritual power of ancient Egypt, which was sufficient for its defence.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Beware! Avoid any direct confrontation with your enemy! He has the upper hand. Becunning and sensible. There is great danger, but there is also the possibility of overcoming it without drawing up battle plans.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: You capitulate unconditionally when the victory is almost won, because you do not have enough patience or endurance.

SIX OF SWORDS
The meaning derives in the positive position from Tipheret and in the negative from Anamelech. The picture on this minor arcanum shows Nut, the goddess of Night, who protects those who swim for the other shore. The general motto of this card is: Every man for himself! If life becomes too difficult or impossible on this side of the river, nothing is left but to begin a new life on the opposite bank. Nut is there to protect and help those who must flee. She helps them to find their way by the light of her stars and hides them in her darkness.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A solution to our problems is in sight. We must keep clear of dangers and the place where they lie in wait for us. It is better to flee than to remain.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Beware! Running away from difficulties does not mean that they are solved. They will follow us wherever we go. First the solution must be found, then we can leave. Favourable changes that are expected will be delayed.

FIVE OF SWORDS
In the positive position, this  card’s  meaning is derived from Sedutah, and in the negative from Azima. In the picture we see the Egyptian queen Cleopatra, from the Ptolemaic dynasty, preparing her  own death, which she chose having been defeated by the Roman Emperor Augustus. A sad end to an all too daring rule.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: At the present moment courage is required to survive and overcome the misfortune of a lost battle. Loss of honour, wealth and popularity.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: The sudden death or suicide of a depressive person near to us. It is possible to prevent it, there is no time to lose. Beware! In our immediate vicinity there is a traitor.

FOUR OF SWORDS
In the positive position, the meaning of this card is derived from Geburah, while in the negative position it comes from Marcolis. The picture shows four priestesses praying to Hathor. Two priestesses are singing and two are dancing and they use their art to express their reverence of the ram-headed goddess Hathor. In ancient Egypt she was one of the gods of love and also symbolised fertility. The four swords lying on the ground indicate that a phase of exuberant love holds sway, rather than war.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Peace and armistice agreed in the midst of battle. Unforeseen or planned solutions achieved through charm and love, in order to avert an impending conflict. Material conflict that is resolved though a marriage of love or convenience.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Exile. Emigration. Inability to conduct oneself in times of war as in times of peace. A wild drinking bout or orgy in disastrous circumstances. Incarceration. Depression accompanied by constant aggression. A crime of passion with fatal consequences. Disastrous jealousy.

THREE  OF SWORDS
In the positive position, this card derives its meaning from Binah and in the negative position from Thartac. The picture shows Isis, Mut and Nut coming together to lead Osiris back into eternal life. After the murder of her husband Osiris, Isis bears their son Horus, who has the form of a bird. While the moon is high in the sky and the sun below, she digs up the parts of her husband’s body with the help of Mut, the goddess of gentleness and restraint and Nut, goddess of the night and of the stars. With the assistance of her sister Nephtis, she will mourn for him and, through the power that lies in the magic of love, she will bring him back to the eternal life of the gods.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A necessary conflict to renew the bonds of indispensable unity. Separation and discord with the aim of building up something better than what already exists.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Fight. Struggle. Discord. Conflict. Brawling. Damage caused by a traffic accident. Insults, for which one wants to be avenged.

TWO OF SWORDS
In the positive position, the meaning of this card is drawn from Chochmah, and in the negative position from Nibbas. In the picture we see Khonsu, the Moon god. Khonsu has two heads: one looks into the past and the other into the future. Between them, the moon looks into the present. Khonsu is also the god of magic. With one sword, Khonsu absorbs the energy of the past and with the other, he controls the forces of nature in the future. Khonsu tramples misfortune and misery, represented by crocodiles, underfoot, because he is also the healer of the soul and of the body. Khonsu is a male deity, who works together with three female deities: Isis, Mut and Nut, who can be seen on the Three of Swords card together.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Truce. Equilibrium. The opposing forces of the universe meet each other in a positive fashion and create the life on Earth. Beauty and justice are formed out of ugliness and injustice. Enmity becomes friendship. They are all exactly as strong as their opponent or competitor and forced to become their partner or accomplice.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Someone who, purely out of self-interest, creates discord and tension. Intrigues which lead to argument and fracture. Misuse of trust. Lack of self-discipline.

ACE OF SWORDS
The positive position derives its meaning from Kether, the negative from Rempham. In the picture we see Ibis-Thoth, who notes down our deeds after our death. An Egyptian doctor and Pharaoh, who was posthumously declared a god, he appears in Hebrew mythology as the archangel Raphael, in Greek mythology as Hermes and as the Roman Mercury. The Egyptians usually represented him with a bird’s head. It is Ibis, who writes down our good and bad deeds on a slate for the divine court under Osiris. The Ace of Swords, like Ibis-Thoth, represents the decision between good and evil.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Glory. Success. Victory and triumph. The divine power comes to the aid of earthly power. The power of thoughts, that can move mountains. Healing. We can lean on someone who will take our side in difficulties. Progress. After a long battle, freedom achieved at last. Letting go of prejudices that hinder movement. The end of immobility. Healing, magical power.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Destructive, negative magical power. Damnation. Misuse of power. The help for which one had waited, arrives later than expected.

KING OF DISCS
Shah Path Ali from the Kadjar dynasty, a Persian king who loved to display his material wealth by wearing huge crowns encrusted with gemstones and pearls. The 21st March is the Persian New Year’s Day. On this day Shah Path Ali used to distribute gold pieces and coins, as the card shows, to the dignitaries of his country and to the foreign ambassadors.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A man (or possibly a woman) of a practical character, who is always aware of the real possibilities and does not confuse his day-dreams with the realistically realisable, but who knows how to make progress and, based on existing possibilities, to achieve the greatest possible profit. He is a person who turns everything he touches into gold. He has a deep sense of responsibility towards his own, to business partners and all who depend on him. It is difficult to annoy him, though he is hard on those who treat him unjustly or regard him as an enemy. He values everything beautiful, chooses impressive accommodation wherever he stays and is, when he can allow himself to be, a patron and art collector.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A miserly person without any sense of beauty and refinement. A materialistic person, who despite his material wealth, remains a poor and pitiable person. An egoist without a sense of compassion. A demagogue who speaks of the interests of others in order to achieve his own goals. Since this person has a weak character, he is submissive, easily bought and bribed.

QUEEN OF DISCS
The favourite wife of Shah Path Ali. She is one of the official wives of the Shah and not one of the thirtysix subsidiary wives of the harem. She is content with her position and with the riches that the Shah heaps upon her, although she is not really happy. She was too thin for the Shah’s taste. He married Sogholi Khanum, the queen of our minor arcanum for reasons of state — her father was the first minister of the treasury — and so he told her that she had three months in which to fatten herself up or be thrown out. She had to eat extremely heavily to achieve the aesthetic ideal of his majesty. She reached the required weight in time and remained his favourite to the end of her days.
In the positive and the negative position, this card belongs to the domain of the En Soph.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: An ambitious and realistic woman who tackles the challenges and problems of everyday life with uncommon courage. She tries to achieve a position worthy of envy and general respect and above all to maintain them. She loves comfort, beautiful clothes and a finely furnished home. She can easily forgive her rivals and enemies, is full of feeling and has good intentions. Count yourself lucky to belong to her circle of acquaintances, friends or family.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A miserly and narrow-minded person who is envious of all who are happier than herself. Boundless opulence, lust, gluttony, stinginess. Exaggerated mistrust. Misunderstandings. Paranoia with respect to everything inexplicable. Loss through avarice!

KNIGHT OF DISCS
The card shows the knight on a camel, which stands on gold coins. The knight is a Sufi, an esoteric who is interested in everything visible, though particularly everything that is hidden from our eyes. With his hand he is gesturing to the camel that it must continue to the other side of the golden path, because gold is only a means and not a goal in itself. It is a means that one must be able to shrug off. On his journey, the Sufi must find the way to reach Vesal, which signifies the mystical union with the creator, with God. In both the positive and the negative position, this card belongs to the domain of the En Soph.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A young person who is committed to justice and human rights. He possesses a highly developed sense of honour. He maintains and imparts the traditional ethical-moralistic and esoteric values. A person of great faith who prefers to live the virtues rather than talk about them and who is incorruptible.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A person who tries to maintain a system of old-fashioned and outmoded values against the forces of progress. Someone who is unable to recognise the demands of the present and the future.

PAGE OF DISCS
The picture shows, in a miniature style, the Persian Safavid Aladdin who is sparing with the treasure that the genie (jinn) of the magic lamp has brought him. He does not waste his riches, even though he has acquired them overnight. Behind him is a dark green cypress, the symbol of his youth, while he is already thinking about the days of his old age, symbolised by the tree, whose leaves have already fallen, growing behind Aladdin’s treasure chest.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: A young conscientious person who is proud of his responsibility, exact in the performance of his duty and» very honest.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A person who is fastidious to a pathological extent. Pedantry. Someone who is always late. He» likes to let others feel the extent of his power and his authority, which in most cases turns the majority of people against him and eventually leads to his being excluded by everyone. Tendency towards hypochondria.

TEN OF DISCS
This card derives its meaning, in the positive position, from Malcuth and in the negative position from Adramelech. The picture on this minor arcanum shows us a happy family: father, mother, child and grandfather. It is also possible that the grandfather is not present in person. He may already have been dead for some time, so that only his spirit is present and rejoices over the good fortune of his descendants to whom he has left a spiritually as well as materially useful inheritance.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Inseparable family ties. Inheritance. Family possessions and heirlooms. The foundation of a family tradition may be meant. Awareness of identity. Prosperity that can grow in the course of several generations. A family that had fallen on hard times which, thanks to the efforts of the young, gains in material position again.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Disastrous and narrowing results of too strict a family tradition. Problems between family members due to differing views on an inheritance. Falsification of a will. A guardian who brings his ward and his inheritance. A relation who misuses his authority to cheat the younger members of the family out of their property.

NINE OF DISCS
In the positive position, the meaning derives from Jesod, and in the negative from Nisroch. In the picture on this minor arcanum, we see the hero of a Persian fairy tale who owned a donkey that laid gold coins. This fairy tale was taken up by the brothers Grimm and other European storytellers. A boy is given a tablecloth, on which he always miraculously finds something to eat. The innkeeper steals it from him. Thereupon he is given a magic donkey that lays nine gold coins every night. The innkeeper steals the donkey as well. After that, the magician who gave him the first two presents, gave him a third one: a club that constantly beats anyone who tries to steal from its master. At that, the terrified innkeeper gives back the tablecloth and the donkey. The moral of the story is that one should not be naive if one wants to draw benefit from one’s own goods.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: We understand that we must defend what we have won so far. We no longer behave naively in business. Material success. Appreciation of our work. Recognition of our professional mastery. Comfort and prosperity. Popularity due to professional skill. Skilful, discreet and diplomatic removal of professional rivals.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Prosperity that is achieved by means that one does not admit. Material success that is gained through the impoverishment of our fellow men. All these things will strengthen our future negative karma. Beware: The present financial stability is in danger of being short-lived! Beware of traitors and falsifiers.

EIGHT OF DISCS
The positive position derives its meaning from Hod and the negative position from Succoth. The picture on this minor arcanum shows a highly gifted young woman engrossed in her work weaving a Persian carpet. The eight gold coins are the symbol of the value of the manual skill and mastery of an artistic craft.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: All the energy and time, the effort and commitment that it costs to complete a task are not wasted. The result will be rewarding and satisfying. Advantageous changes to our material circumstances. Well-rewarded zeal in one’s work. The card also indicates that the time has come when we must multiply our efforts so that, in the long term, they will bring results.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Beware! It would be wrong to concentrate on an immediate return from invested capital at the cost of long-term profit. It would benefit our own career just as much as the professional training of our own children or of young people in our immediate vicinity. Dishonest behaviour and misuse of trust in business, career and financial matters. Wasting of career opportunities in favour of highly varied and badly chosen goals.

SEVEN OF DISCS
In the positive position, the meaning of this card is derived from Netsach and in the negative from Nergal. In the picture we see a tree whose seven fruits are gold coins. A gardener is endlessly occupied with turning the soil and tending the tree and everything that grows on the ground. Only continual persistence can secure the lasting fruitfulness of the treasure tree.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: This card is a warning not to rest on our laurels and the results of the past, but to continue our efforts in the present so that we can achieve success in the future. There are possibilities for material success, but beware! When we conquer our inactivity, we have won, but if we remain passive we cannot draw any benefit. God helps those that help themselves.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Predictable financial loss, bankruptcy or failure, if one is not very careful. A bad moment for investments or financial risks. At the present it is better to keep out of the way of financial ups and downs. Until fate is better disposed towards us, all games of chance should be avoided.

SIX OF DISCS
In the positive position, this card’s meaning is derived from Tipheret and in the negative from Anamelech. On this minor arcanum, we can see another of the most famous heroes from the Arabian Nights: Aladdin, to whom the jinn of the magic lantern gives the possibility of being kind and generous. Aladdin himself has experienced poverty before fate made him rich. For him, generosity remains very important. In the picture we see the jinn, or genie of the magic lamp who always gives Aladdin huge gold coins, so that he can give them straight to the old pauper who begs him for alms.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Unusual or brilliant solutions in financial matters. Material and financial balance. Gains that deliver more than one has invested. It is the card of the altruist, who is not content to use his property purely to develop his own personality, but who, above all, helps others to stand up and find their own place in the world. This arcanum indicates love of our neighbour, sympathy for those who are weaker than ourselves, compassion and kind-heartedness.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Senseless wasting of the assets that fate granted us. Loss of money to a thief or due to one’s own carelessness. Assets that should be used for business investments, but which are spent solely to buy or rent moveable or immoveable goods for personal use. Gifts to ungrateful people.

FIVE OF DISCS
The meaning of this card is derived, in the positive position, from Sedutah and in the negative position from Azima. On the card we see one of the best-known heroes from the Arabian Nights: Sinbad the Sailor, as he loses his treasure in a shipwreck. Sinbad tells of his adventures in order to show that human destiny consists in the alternation between good and bad luck. As a rich man, he suffers a shipwreck and all his treasure is swallowed by the ocean and the fishes. Then he becomes rich again, and so on.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: This minor arcanum indicates to us that we will have to f face material, existential and other difficulties in the near future. It consoles us, though, with the thought that every piece of bad luck will be followed by a compensation of an emotional or spiritual nature, or by new outlooks that fate offers. Fears. Unemployment. One risks being robbed or falling victim to thieves, cutthroats or burglars.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A warning that the routine procedures by which we have regulated our lives so far will ruin us.
Good intentions are not enough to be respected and liked by those whom we like. Circumspection and proceeding with wisdom are called for. We must not forget that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions and bordered with folly.

FOUR OF DISCS
The positive position draws its meaning from Geburah, the negative position from Marcolis. On the card we see the Little Shah Abbas II, who ascended the throne at the age of ten and was an outstanding diplomat, here receiving three foreign ambassadors, with whom he successfully negotiates. This Persian king of the Safavid dynasty astonished the whole world with his diplomatic ability. In front of each person lies a gold coin. The scene is taking place in Isfahan, which was the Persian capital under the Safavids.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Complete financial stability. Foreseeable founding of a commercial or financial empire. Regard due to economic and financial success. A feeling for diplomacy. Predestination to great deeds.
This minor arcanum signifies that peace, order and observance of the law can better be achieved through business and diplomatic dealings than through war or short-term methods.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: No feeling for diplomacy. Over-centralisation of power and energy. Fanaticism, that hinders any understanding with those who think otherwise. Warlike, indignant character. Impossibility of finding a compromise. Prohibition of pluralism. Tyranny. Lacking instinct for democracy. Unpopularity. Disrepute. A powerful No that is pronounced without respect, out of fearful mistrust.

THREE OF DISCS
The meaning of the positive position is derived from Binah, while in the negative it comes from Thartac. On the picture, in the style of the Persian Safavids, we see a woman who is shaking a tree to make it drop its fruit. They are the fruit of the tree of wealth. It is also the symbol for future wealth.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Perseverance in the building up of future prosperity.
Good use of our work capacity. Progress in the realm of business enterprises. Advancement. Achievement j of Master status. Past and present efforts bear fruit that can be harvested in the future. Profitable mutual assistance and cooperation. Secure wealth for the I following generation.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: Failure. Bankruptcy. Loss of illusions in the I realm of career. An unsuccessful undertaking. Perceptive accusations from our immediate surroundings or from people whose opinion means much to us. Prejudices that prevent us from learning from other people’s bad experiences. Present poverty that is rooted in the past laziness and inabilities of our parents, but which can be changed, although a considerable effort is required.

TWO OF DISCS
In the positive position, the meaning of this card is derived from Chochmah and in the negative position from Nibbas. On this arcanum we see two Sufis, or dervishes. The whirling dervish reaches a state of mystical ecstasy, after long whirling, which can lead to them falling down or fainting. During the Sema or whirling dance of the dervishes, the dancer holds up his right hand to catch the energy of divine goodness and the gold coin of existence, while the left hand stays low to release back to the earth everything corrupt that flows into him in the course of his life.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: The cyclic phases of fate that keep the world in motion. The natural phases of the highs and lows. The dervishes and Sufis know that what is up there must sometime come down and that what is down must climb up. An atmosphere of love and ecstasy. Confident trust in kismet, in fate. Conscious influence of the laws of existence and of nature in order to be successful in all areas. Comprehension of the inexplicable. Esoteric initiation. Transcendental strivings. Journeys that make us richer and wiser. Various studies.
In the negative position, with the bottom uppermost: A missed opportunity with regard to success, because one dedicates oneself exclusively to the sensory pleasure of the moment. Inability to carry out one’s plans for the future. Lacking ability for study. Dependence on alcohol or other drugs.

ACE OF DISCS
In the positive position, this card draws its meaning I from Kether, while in the negative position it comes from Rempham. On this minor arcanum we can see the Persian poet Omar Khayyam. He was a mathematician, initiated a calendar reform, was an astrologer at the Persian court and wrote a quatrain poem called the Rubaiyat, which made him famous after his death. Here we see him as a young man who is courting the favourite cup-bearer, Saki.
Omar’s wisdom is expressed in the fact that he advises everyone to rejoice in the earthly gifts that God has given us.
Divinatory character:
In the positive position, with the top uppermost: Worthiness and acquisition of worldly goods. Comfort and prosperity, in which we rejoice. Stability and wealth, which brings us the element earth. A choice of routes that lead through the earthly possibilities to the spirit. Moderate, wise and philosophical hedonism. A secure future. Material security. Wealth and ownership of assets of all kinds. The elegant simplicity of a person of the world.
In the negative position with the bottom uppermost: Addiction to sensual enjoyment and dangerous pleasures. A lack of any belief, apart from belief in the material. Fear of death. Aspiring to power for its own sake and not as a means. Miserliness. Material wealth and narrow-mindedness.  Prejudices that force us into preconceived modes of thought.
